Thistle Divers were back in the water last weekend for a fantastic day of shore diving at one of Scotland’s best-known dive sites, Kentallen Wall.
Four members made the journey north and were rewarded with beautiful weather, flat calm water and excellent conditions for a day of exploration beneath the surface.
Our first dive began with the swim out to the wall itself, but the journey there proved just as exciting as the destination.
Before even reaching the wall, divers encountered an impressive variety of marine life. Sightings included thornback rays resting on the seabed, a catshark, a conger eel and several other species making the most of the calm conditions.
Reaching the wall is always a highlight of the site. The dramatic underwater landscape offers overhangs, ledges and countless nooks and crannies to investigate. Every dive reveals something different, making it a favourite destination for many club members.
On the return journey, divers were treated to further sightings, including a sea scorpion and a well-camouflaged flatfish blending perfectly into the seabed.
After an enjoyable first dive, it was time to warm up and refuel.
With the sun shining and the loch looking its best, members enjoyed cake and refreshments on the deck of the Holly Tree Hotel while sharing stories from the dive and discussing what they had seen underwater.
These surface intervals are often as memorable as the dives themselves, providing an opportunity to relax, chat and enjoy the company of fellow divers.
For the second dive, the group chose a different approach, spending more time exploring the upper sections of the wall.
Once again, the site delivered an abundance of marine life. Divers encountered more flatfish, gurnard and pipefish, along with one of the day’s most interesting finds—a beautiful cloak anemone.
The varied terrain, combined with the diversity of species found throughout the dive, demonstrated exactly why Kentallen Wall remains such a popular destination for underwater photographers, marine life enthusiasts and divers simply looking to enjoy a relaxed scenic dive.
While the marine life and underwater scenery were undoubtedly the stars of the day, the trip also highlighted one of the best aspects of club diving: spending time with like-minded people who share a passion for exploring Scotland’s underwater world.
After drying off and packing away the kit, the group rounded off the day with a well-earned stop at the Real Food Cafe in Tyndrum before heading home.
Days like this are a reminder that some of the best diving adventures can be found right here in Scotland.
